Freediving Assistant Instructor

SSI Assistant Freediving Instructor is the first step for avid freedivers to become an instructor. This program will give you the rights to teach Snorkeling, Try, Basic, and Pool Freediving courses along with the upgrade options to the most popular pool freediving specialties and higher levels.

What Will You Learn?

If your heart is beating for freediving, and you want to start a life literally in the water, the SSI Freediving Assistant Instructor level can be your first step to make your dreams come true. Once you become an assistant instructor, you will be able to teach snorkeling, try, basic and pool freediving courses and lead certified freedivers.

The SSI Freediving Assistant Instructor Course consists of two main phases:

  • Six Academic Sessions (Independent study or in a classroom)
  • Three Pool / Confined Water Sessions – Where its time to use the knowledge and skills you acquired, in the open ocean to complete the SSI Freediving Assistant Instructor Course.

What Will You Do?

  • Read and complete Sections 1-6, including reviews and assessments, of the Freediving InstructorTraining Course digital learning.
  • Complete Academic Sessions 1-6 as outlined in the instructor manual for the Freediving InstructorTraining Course.
  • Complete the program’s final exam.
  • Complete the CandidateWater Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI Training Standards if it has been more than six months since the candidate has been evaluated.
  • Pass all requirements and evaluations for Practical Application Sessions 1-8 as outlined in the instructor manual for the Freediving InstructorTraining Course

Course Schedule

Recommended hours for completion: 45-50. The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on student needs, student ability and environmental conditions.

Course Prerequisites

• Minimum age: 18 years old.

Option 1

• Have logged at least 50 in-water freediving sessions.

Have the following SSI certifications or equivalent from a recognized training agency:

• Freediving Level 1

• TrainingTechniques

Option 2

Have the following SSI certifications or equivalent from a recognized training agency:

• TrainingTechniques

Have the following active status SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:

• Basic Freediving Instructor

Have issued at least:

• 25 Basic Freediving certifications

Equipment Requirements

Unless the program-specific instructor manual states otherwise, each freediving student must be equipped with a properly fitted Total Freediving System, including:

• Mask

• Snorkel

• Bi-fins(standard length or long freediving fins)

• Exposure suit appropriate for the environment

• Weight System

• Logbook

Students are required to wear a freediving safety lanyard if any of the following conditions apply:

• Level 2 Freediving programs and higher

• Vertical visibility is less than 10 meters

• The planned freedive is deeper than 20 meters in depth

• On any site where the natural bottom depth is 30 meters or deeper

*Equipment will be provided by your Dive Centre. We recommend that you should get your own gear once you become a certified diver.
