What Will You Learn?

Becoming an SSI Instructor Trainer is the ultimate accomplishment. Meet other SSI Instructors worldwide at the Instructor Training Seminar.

SSI Instructor Trainers are qualified to teach the Instructor Training Course (ITC) and prepare ITC candidates for their Instructor Evaluation (IE). Instructor Trainers can also teach Specialty Instructor Seminars and the Assistant Instructor Trainer program.

The SSI Instructor Trainer Course consists of three main phases:

  • Twelve Academic Sessions (Independent study or in a classroom)
  • SIX Pool / Confined Water Sessions
  • Two Open Water Dives- Where its time to use the knowledge and skills you acquired, in the open ocean to complete the SSI Instructor Trainer Course.

Maximum Training Depth : 40 meters / 130 feet

What Will You Do?

  • Complete all academic sessions as outlined in the instructor manual for the InstructorTrainer Seminar.
  • Complete the program’s final exam.
  • Complete the CandidateWater Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI Training Standards.
  • Pass all requirements and evaluations listed in the instructor manual for the Instructor Trainer Seminar.

Course Schedule

Recommended hours for completion: 70-80. The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on student needs, student ability and water conditions.

Course Prerequisites

Minimum age:

  • 21 years old.

Provide written proof of having assisted with at least one (1) ITC and one (1) Instructor Crossover program with an active status Instructor Trainer.

Have the following active status SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:

• Master Instructor

Have issued at least:

• 20 recreational-level SSI certifications • 5 professional-level SSI certifications

Equipment Requirements

During all in-water scuba training, each student must be equipped with a properly fitted Total Diving System:
• Mask
• Snorkel
• Fins
• Buoyancy compensator with power inflator
• Weight System
• Delivery System with cylinder, primary regulator and alternate air source
• Information System with submersible pressure gauge, depth gauge, and timing device (a dive computer is recommended)
• Exposure suit appropriate for the environment
• Logbook
Each SSI Professional must be equipped with at least all student equipment, plus:
• A dive computer
• A deployable surface marker buoy (SMB)
• A surface emergency signalling device
• A cutting device
• A compass
Candidates for SSI Dive Professional programs must use a professional-level Total Diving System.

*Equipment will be provided by your Dive Centre. We recommend that you should get your own gear once you become a certified diver.
