What Will You Learn?

Do you dream of travelling the world working as a scuba instructor? With this globally recognized certification, you can work at SSI Training Centers represented in over 130 countries.

This in-depth program provides all you need to become an SSI Open Water Instructor. Once certified, you can train new SSI divers, teach Enriched Air Nitrox, Diver Stress & Rescue and create Dive Guides. The possibilities are endless, so start your dive career now!

The SSI Open Water Instructor Course consists of three main phases:

  • Six Academic Sessions (Independent study or in a classroom)
  • Four Pool / Confined Water Sessions
  • Two Open Water Dives- Where its time to use the knowledge and skills you acquired, in the open ocean to complete the SSI Open Water Instructor Course.

What Will You Do?

  • Log at least 100 open water dives totaling 65 hours or more.
  • Read and complete all sections, including reviews and assessments, from the InstructorTraining Course digital learning.
  • Complete all academic sessions as outlined in the instructor manual for the InstructorTraining Course.
  • Complete the CandidateWater Fitness Evaluation as outlined in the SSI Training Standards if it has been more than six months since the candidate has been evaluated.
  • Pass all requirements and evaluations as outlined in the instructor manual for the InstructorTraining Course.

Course Schedule

Recommended hours for completion: 48-58. The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on student needs, student ability and water conditions.

Course Prerequisites

Minimum age:

  • 18 years old.
  • Have logged at least 75 open water dives totaling 50 hours or more.

Have the following SSI certifications or equivalent from a recognized training agency:

  • Enriched Air Nitrox 40

Have the following active status SSI certifications or an equivalent from a recognized training agency:

  • Divemaster

Equipment Requirements

During all in-water scuba training, each student must be equipped with a properly fitted Total Diving System:
• Mask
• Snorkel
• Fins
• Buoyancy compensator with power inflator
• Weight System
• Delivery System with cylinder, primary regulator and alternate air source
• Information System with submersible pressure gauge, depth gauge, and timing device (a dive computer is recommended)
• Exposure suit appropriate for the environment
• Logbook
Each SSI Professional must be equipped with at least all student equipment, plus:
• A dive computer
• A deployable surface marker buoy (SMB)
• A surface emergency signalling device
• A cutting device
• A compass
Candidates for SSI Dive Professional programs must use a professional-level Total Diving System.

*Equipment will be provided by your Dive Centre. We recommend that you should get your own gear once you become a certified diver.
